Bilingual Development in ASD Children: Myths and Reality

One of the most common misconceptions among ASD parents: "don't teach your child two languages, it will confuse them." But the latest research clearly refutes this.

The Origin of the Myth

The fear is understandable — if a child already struggles with their native language, it seems logical that a second language would only make things worse. However, this intuition is not evidence-based.

What Does Research Say?

More than 20 years of research shows that bilingual ASD children:

  • Do not develop more slowly in communication than monolingual peers
  • Show advantages in certain executive functions (e.g., cognitive flexibility)
  • The two languages don't compete with each other in the brain
  • Key Studies

A meta-analysis by Paradis et al. (2021) analyzed 40+ studies. Conclusion: bilingualism does not pose a risk to the language development of ASD children.

    Calmika's Dual Language Mode

Calmika keeps communication native-first and places bilingual support where it is clearest: in the Vocabulary module, where children can practice native and target-language words side by side in a predictable visual environment.

Currently available language pairs: Hungarian-English, Hungarian-German, English-Spanish, and many more.
